Local and Global Initiatives
Work Abroad
Roberts Park has a long history of mission work around the world. In October, 2011, Pastor Kim and nine members of Roberts Park departed Indianapolis International Airport for Guatemala. The team traveled to Panajachel and San Andrés Semetabaj to volunteer at Mission Guatemala.
Guatemala is one of the poorest countries in the western hemisphere. Many families around San Andrés Semetabaj are now enjoying the thrill of cooking on a stove for the first time in their lives! The Roberts Park team installed eleven high-efficiency cook stoves (right) that will greatly improve the quality of life for these families, most of whom had been using an indoor open fire, similar to a campfire, or some other kind of makeshift stove.
The Roberts Park team also organized the storeroom, built a suspension bridge and slide for the preschool playground, finished building the playground fence, read with preschool children, and spent time playing soccer and doing crafts with the school children in Nueva Esperanza, a community where Mission Guatemala has a lunchtime feeding program.
Roberts Park also has an ongoing partnership with the Anti-Poverty Initiative in Senegal. This important mission led by Sebastine Ujereh has several facets, including a program to bring safe drinking water to rural villages, and another to train urban dwellers to create rooftop gardens. A micro-lending program enables women to bring their business dreams to reality.
In the United States
On the national level, Roberts Park is an active supporter of the Henderson Settlement in Kentucky and the McCurdy School in New Mexico.
Here at Home
Along with sponsoring these global and national ministries, we are also very active in our own community. We support the Fletcher Place Food Pantry through the collection of canned goods. Our members also volunteer at their summer camp program for children. We have been participants in the annual CROP walk to raise funds for hunger relief in Central Indiana and world-wide. We also have an ongoing relationship with the local chapter of Habitat for Humanity, having assisted in the building of several homes.
If you are searching for a way to make a positive difference in the world today, Roberts Park is a great place to begin. Our service to one another is a source of deep joy and satisfaction.
