what we

believe

  • ABOUT GOD

God, who is one, is revealed in three distinct persons.

  • ABOUT SALVATION

We believe in the mystery of salvation through Jesus Christ. God became human in Jesus whose life, death and resurrection demonstrate God's redeeming love.

  • ABOUT THE HOLY SPIRIT

The Holy Spirit is God's present activity in our midst. When we sense God's leading, God's challenge, or God's support or comfort, it's the Holy Spirit at work.

  • ABOUT OUR IMAGE

Genesis 1:27 asserts that we've been made in the image of the Creator. Like God we have the capacity to love and care, to communicate, and to create.

  • ABOUT THE CHURCH

The church is the body of Christ, an extension of Christ’s life and ministry in the world today.

  • ABOUT THE BIBLE

We believe that the Bible is the primary authority for our faith and practice.

  • ABOUT THE KINGDOM OF GOD

The kingdom or reign of God is both a present reality and future hope.

what to expect

  • Accessibility

The Vermont and Delaware entrance both have a wheelchair ramp. There is an elevator to reach the upper level, where the sanctuary is, and an entrance ramp to the sanctuary.

  • Where do I go for the service when I arrive?

Park in the lot behind the church and enter the building at the Vermont Street entrance. Once inside the doors you will be greeted by a church member. If there is no church member there, turn to the left and walk through the fellowship hall to the center doors which lead to the foyer. The sanctuary is on the second floor.  If you require an elevator, once inside the Vermont Street doors turn right and just past the stairway there is a ramp. Go up the ramp; the elevator will be on the right. There will be a sign in the elevator indicating which floors require using stairs (balcony seating does not require the use of stairs).

  • What should I wear?

Come as you are. There’s no dress code. Usual attire ranges from jeans to suits.

  • What happens during a service?

Worship services include hymns, readings of Scripture, choral singing, messages with contemporary themes, and pipe organ musical accompaniment. An easy-to-follow printed bulletin is a guide for the service and contains information about activities and upcoming events as well. Please complete an attendance card located at the end of the pew.

  • Can I participate in communion?

Roberts Park UMC celebrates communion on the first Sunday of the month. As practitioners of an open table, all are invited to commune together. We do not discriminate based on how old or young you are, whether or not you've been baptized or hold a church membership, or any other reason. When we say all are welcome, we hold firm to the belief that all means all.

We celebrate communion by using intinction, which is when communicants dip their bread into the common cup of grape juice and partake in the elements together. Pre-packaged elements are available for those who prefer.

  • Are children welcome?

Children are welcome at all worship services. Children are invited to join teachers for a fun time of Worship & Wonder outside the sanctuary during the normal worship time. The children are dismissed during the first hymn.

  • is there fellowship after the service?

Absolutely! A casual coffee hour follows the 10:30 a.m. service every Sunday. Roberts Park is a friendly congregation, and you will probably be approached by a few people wanting to introduce themselves and chat a bit as well.
